Colorado Driver Point Suspensions

Colorado point suspensions are based on reported convictions accumulated during specified periods. Thresholds differ by age, and narrow employed-driver provisions use separate conditions.

Age-based point thresholds

Colorado DMV currently lists twelve points in twelve months or eighteen points in twenty-four months for drivers age twenty-one or older. Different thresholds apply to drivers ages eighteen through twenty and drivers under eighteen.

A citation and a reported conviction are different events for point-record purposes.

Employed-driver provision

Colorado DMV describes separate thresholds in limited circumstances when a person proves at the hearing that the person is employed as a driver and that qualifying tickets arose in the course of that employment. Employment involving driving does not by itself establish the provision.

Hearing and license status

DMV may issue notice of a point-suspension hearing after a record reaches an applicable threshold. A probationary license may be considered in some circumstances but is not automatic.

A suspension period and administrative reinstatement are separate subjects. Other active restraints can affect license status.

Colorado DMV currently lists twelve points in twelve consecutive months or eighteen points in twenty-four consecutive months for a driver age twenty-one or older.

Do different point thresholds apply to drivers under twenty-one?

Yes. Separate thresholds apply to drivers under eighteen and drivers ages eighteen through twenty.

Does a driving job automatically create a higher threshold?

No. The employed-driver provision uses specific proof and hearing conditions, including qualifying tickets arising in the course of employment.

A probationary license may be considered in some circumstances, but it is not automatic or guaranteed.
